regaled him with his twelve classics

繙十二經 fānshíèrjīng, literally "to interpret the twelve classics." Confucius is traditionally (though incorrectly) credited with editing the books of Poetry, History, Ritual, Music, Changes, and the Spring and Autumn Annals. It is unclear what additional six are added but commentators point out a pun on 繙 fān, "to interpret," with 煩 fán, "to bore."
