This is a very tentative translation. 脩身 xiūshēn is the Confucian concept of self-cultivation, the idea that you make the world a better place by becoming a better person and that the best leader leads by example. (For instance, see Analect 12.17.) In a sense, Zhuangzi seems to agree that the work is internal, at least in the sense that he does not seem to think that the solution to the life's problems lies in policies or inventions. But he seems to think that good examples cause more resentment than inspiration. . Paradoxically, he seems to think that the way to make the world a better place is by stopping trying to be better person. How this is different from doing nothing is a good question. Unlike 1.04, where Whence tells Yao to give it up and go home, at the end of this episode Confucius does say Yan Hui is ready to advise the prince.
